Our summer series of expert-led field trips kicked off in fine style with a field trip focusing on Verloren Valei’s geology, led by Trevor and Ann Pearton. In preparation, Trevor gave a very interesting presentation at the Wanderers Golf Club on the preceding Thursday, which several of us who could not make the trip attended. It was fascinating, and was repeated at the beginning of the tour on Saturday, 20th October.
Some 11 people participated on the field trip, including some of the MTPA experts such as Hannes Marais. Mike Zingel, who was one of the party, says the interaction between them and Trevor greatly enhanced the value of the trip.
It was a typical Dullstroom summer weekend: cold, rainy and windy, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm. Truly understanding how these high wetlands were formed, and what is going on under the grassland, deepens one’s understanding, and appreciation, of the Reserve. Big thanks to Trevor and Ann for leading this field trip and sharing your great knowledge.
