The Friends of Verloren Valei is a group of volunteers whose primary aim is to support the reserve management in conserving it as a wetland and biodiversity reserve in pristine condition for future generations to enjoy. We work with the reserve management to come up with projects where we feel we can add value—we are not responsible for the management of the Reserve in any way. Learn more about the ecological diversity of Verloren Valei. We are affiliated to WESSA (The Wildlife & Environment Society of South Africa).
A recent project was to provide the Reserve with material needed to complete the fencing of the property. We are currently helping with finding solutions to the various challenges related to the provincial road that traverses Verloren Valei: how to keep our game in and also prevent the ill-maintained road from further polluting the wetlands.
Another important initiative for us is to manage a series of expert-led field trips to Verloren Valei. Because the Reserve is closed, conventional tourists can only follow the existing “tourist route” and then only with a guide.; going on one of our field trips is a way to see more of this beautiful place and learn about the various aspects of its ecology. Recent field trips have focused on geology, orchids and wildflowers, birds and butterflies. The SA Field Trial Club also provides regular help in monitoring the game-bird population. Members of the Friends of Verloren Valei receive a discount when attending these field trips.
If you’re interested in contributing to the preservation of this unique, high-altitude wetland, please consider joining the Friends of Verloren Valei and participating in our projects. Annual membership is R200 for families, R150 for individuals and R500 for clubs/ corporates. E-mail info@verlorenvalei.org.za to request a membership application form.
